PTA chairman reveals who ordered ban on 'X', internet shutdowns in Pakistan

Major General (Rtd) Hafeezur Rehman, the chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), made it clear that the federal government is the only entity with the authority to ban the social media site “X,” which was formerly known as Twitter.

It was revealed in informal interviews with the media that as soon as the government issued the order, the ban on “X” will be revoked. There have been a lot of complaints from Pakistan on the platform. Currently, the Sindh High Court is hearing the site’s case.

The chairman pointed out that, compared to 116 in India, Pakistan saw only seven internet outages in 2023, in response to questions about internet outages. Even though the PTA condenses internet shutdowns, national security still comes first, he emphasized.

The Chairman also said that even though internet connections were only momentarily interrupted in some locations at specific times, on Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, mobile services were suspended in certain areas.

He noted that during elections, Bangladesh had halted cell service. He also added that each nation faces different security issues and that decisions are based on gatherings of statistics.

He also verified that because of relentless security concerns, mobile data services in Panjgur’s are temporarily suspended.
