WhatsApp goes down on cellular networks for millions of users across Pakistan starting right after 10 Muharram (Ashura).
For some reason, WhatsApp services in Pakistan have been down on cellular networks for millions of users specifically for sending and receiving files or images. The problem has become a common annoyance specifically for those who use mobile data.
On social media, many users have expressed their dissatisfaction with WhatsApp calls and text messages and media files like videos and images are not being processed or being sent as usual. At the same time, it is fully operational and functioning smoothly for wired broadband (WiFi) users.
According to a popular DownDetector website, users report spiked around 5 pm on 21 July 2024 and most of them have reported issues related to sending voice messages or sending files.
No statement was issued by the telecom regulator, Pakistan TelecommÂunication Authority (PTA), but cellular mobile operators (CMOs) claimed to not have received any complaints. The issue was linked by experts to the suspected installation and testing of the firewall to monitor the internet
WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app among users in Pakistan. WhatsApp is owned by technology conglomerate Meta. It is a messaging app for smartphones such as the iPhone, Android phones Windows Mobile, or Blackberry.
Users can send and receive messages, photos and other information and it is considered an alternative to text messages on SMS.
