Maryam Nawaz, the Chief Minister of Punjab, has prohibited the use of social media for police officers while they are on duty. Well-known social media websites like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, etc. are included in the ban.
The ban was put in place because, in a number of events, multiple videos of on-duty Punjab police officers and female personnel using social media have come to light and have garnered a lot of attention from social media channels.
The use of social media is prohibited by Punjab police in order to evade the practice of personnel using social media while being on duties.
The Inspector General (IG) of the Punjab Police has released fully detailed social media usage guidelines for all officers and staff in response to the directions of the Chief Minister. The new guidelines are released with a strict warning that whoever will be caught using social media and uploading their videos when they are in their uniforms will face serious penalties within their department.
The Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Operations has provided detailed, specific instructions for the new social media policy according to the directives of the Inspector General (IG). According to these instructions, all social media activities ought to be approved by the head of the related unit or by the District Police Officer (DPO).
The Punjab police officers and other employees will be severely restricted from personal expression according to the new policy. On social media, it is prohibited to share thoughts on religious, political, or personal views. Through the approved channels that are overseen by the DPO or head of related unit, official police-related transmission will be restricted.
Private citizens are absolutely forbidden from using police cars or facilities for creating social media content in order to preserve professional barriers according to the guidelines. The Regional Police Officers (RPOs) of Punjab or heads of related units are directly responsible for the implementation of these new rules, and they will be personally held under the charge for any compliance within their domain.
