Google unveiled an AI-powered new feature for Android phones to prevent thieves from retrieving users’ data by locking them out.

It was revealed by Google in May that Android 15 will bring an improved anti-theft function. Users have been anticipating the feature’s much-awaited release with great impatience.

According to a report by Forbes, the AI-based feature will soon be available for devices running Android 10 or newer operating systems.

It was revealed by Mishaal Rahman who posts about latest updates of OS, a frequent user of X, that new anti-theft feature of Google which is called “theft detection lock” is now available to a small number of users who enrolled in the company’s beta program.

Rehman wrote in a statement “Theft detection lock rolling out now for a limited number of users who signed up for the beta program in Brazil. It uses data from your phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope and checks if common motions associated with theft are detected.”

He claims that when the feature senses that the phone has been taken from its owner’s hand, it locks the device automatically.

In order to save the owner’s data, the feature will straight away lock the device’s screen if it notices unusual movement patterns, such as a sudden shock followed by rapid acceleration.

After the feature is fully rolled out, ZDNET stated that it would “probably start with newer Google phones but will eventually be available on all Android 10+ devices, or essentially any modern Android phone.”
