LESCO Green Meter Banned

Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has allegedly banned green meters used for solar systems. LESCO requires all new solar systems to use Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters instead of existing Green Meters.

LESCO Director of Customer Services, Sarwar Mughal issued a notification to ban green meters according to a TV channel report.

Users will need a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from LESCO to buy AMI meters from the market. It will allegedly cost an additional Rs 20,000 to buy these new AMI meters resulting in further financial burden for consumers.

AMI meters provide more advantages despite the extra cost. The main purpose of AMI is to improve billing and reduce power theft, which is the main issue in the region.

Advanced technology in AMI meters helps to monitor and regulate power use by saving consumers money and reducing overbilling. This move to AMI meters is consistent with LESCO’s aim to upgrade its electrical infrastructure and improve customer service.

Update:
LESCO issued clarification that there is no ban on Green meters but they will be shifting to AMI meters which are more advanced as compared to previous meters.
